Waste and recycling

Already for many years, Inex has invested in the development of waste management, and changes in regulation regarding waste management are quickly responded to. The central objectives of new waste legislation, which will come in force in 2011, are the prevention of waste generation, materials recovery and the use of waste primarily as material. These aspects are taken account of in Inex's operations. In 2009, packaged and unpackaged organic waste from Inex was channelled to the production of biogas, as this way waste is used to generate both environmentally friendly biogas for energy production and compost soil products.

In order to prevent the generation of waste, Inex holds packaging audits on a regular basis, assessing how well the product is protected, the recyclability of the package, and the amount of packaging material. Reducing product wastage and the amount of waste is pursued through improving packaging in collaboration with suppliers.

Inex’s aim is to have all logistics workers at Kilo participate in waste management training. Sorting of waste at the Kilo and Hakkila logistics centres is being monitored on a regular basis.

Inex eco-balance 2009

Inex Partners

The raw material and other material streams connected with Inex’s operations, as well as the environmental impacts and costs arising from them, have been outlined in an eco-balance. In 2008 reporting will be developed so that carbon dioxide emissions caused by Inex’s operations are included in the eco-balance.

Inex uses numerous other sustainable development metrics, such as the number and sales of environmental-label as well as organic and fair trade products, internal audits performed, and the number of suppliers that fulfil the social responsibility criteria.
